Name
Until quite recently, this sacrament was most often known as the sacrament of Penance. Penance derives from the Latin word poena, which means pain or suffering.
The sacrament was also formally known as Confession but this terminology was a poor description so, today the preferred name is Reconciliation which more accurately defines the sacrament.
To be reconciled means to re-establish a relationship, and that is exactly what happens through the ceremony of Reconciliation.
